In the past, the phrase “terra incognita” was used on maps to designate unexplored territory. Land was known to exist in these locations, but its precise geography, flora, and fauna had not yet been discovered. The concept can be expanded to refer to anything we explore: ideas, sounds, the unconscious, etc. Indeed, it is an apt metaphor for the process of composing, as well as for listening to new music.

My Terra Incognita reflects an interest in exploration at many levels. Synthesized textures were improvised, and then modified, developed, elaborated upon, and combined in various ways. Further inquiry into the material uncovered new possibilities, eventually resulting in a final form that, while fixed, offers ground for continued exploration by the listener.
